and a chopsaw/tablesaw/router/other woodworking implement, and I could sit and cut it all day. Douglas Fir smells f*cking amazing. Talk about unplanned perks.

This is at work. What you mean to say is, somebody’s customer has money. Vertical grain, clear, Douglas Fir.

Looks gorgeous, smells just as good.

However, being fir, it’ll still put a 2x4 sized splinter through your hand in a heartbeat if you aren’t careful.

We’re a trim supply company, those are door jambs. We sometimes do a “pre-prepped” deal where we cut everything to size and machine for the hinges, so that all the carpenter has to do is fasten everything together and hang the door. That’s what was going on here.

Nothing like building something when the wood smells unreal.

Which is why I build things with Cedar.

Eh, you get over it after you cut and hoof to the house a couple dozen 24' 2x12 roof rafters. There are days I miss framing, but not too many anymore. You finish carpentry guys are funny. You probably measure to the 16th. I remember cutting trim boards and one of the guys threw a something and X/16s measurement at me and I had to do a double take. WTF is a 16th? You probably have a hammer without a knurled head too, don’t cha? Lol.

You are right about the smell though, it's been well over 15 years and I can still smell it if I think about it.

Doug Fir>Cedar. But yeah that too. As long as it’s not Aromatic Cedar for a closet... that stuff is just too damn strong. Heck, even Spuce... 2x4's smell awesome. Poplar and Red Oak on the other hand... blech.

Bonus. Maple or Walnut on a tablesaw with a dull blade.

Well, I hope I never do that, because I don’t want to get over the smell.

And I’m not REALLY a finish carpentry guy, I’m on the supply end. But yeah, we do pre-prep stuff from time to time (which is what this is) and we do measure to the 16th and use a hammer without a knurled head.

At least in the finish side there’s a little variety in smells so you aren’t always sniffing the same thing. That said our biggest species are Poplar and Cedar, and I’m pretty much numb to them.

Its always Western Red from western BC. Great stuff to work with!

It’s way nicer to work with Cedar than Fir, but Fir smells better than Cedar.

Actually, I have a suspicion I’m allergic to Cedar, which sucks.
